UPDATE Bin Collections in Adverse Weather

Message received from ECDC for your information :

"It has regrettably been considered necessary to suspend waste collections today because of the snowy conditions. Drivers were reporting vehicles sliding & a number of loaders fell over. It was, therefore, considered unsafe for both the collection crews & anyone they came into contact with to continue.

If collections are able to resume tomorrow, it is intended to suspend green bin collections until the end of the week, which would allow outstanding black sack & blue bin collections to be completed before the weekend.

The forecast would suggest that temperatures will now remain below zero until Sunday & that more snow is expected during Thursday & Friday. If as I fear we are unable to collect tomorrow & Friday, it is intended to suspend green bin collections for all of next week to allow for missed black sack & blue bin collections to be completed.

Green bin collections are being sacrificed first because at this time of year bins only usually contain a small amount of food waste, which in these conditions often freezes to the bins side, so won't empty out of the bin anyway. Low temperatures mean that food will not rot, so can reasonably be left for another 2 weeks.

I regret that vehicle & crew numbers available mean this it will not be possible to cover all collections, and I hope you will accept the reasoning given for prioritising black sack & blue bin collections.

Information has been placed on the Council's web site & provided to the Communications Team for media & social media releases."
